Power springs are sometimes called clock springs, helical torsion springs, and coil springs. They are made by tightly winding the spring material around a mandrel in a round housing and attaching the free end to a metal or plastic housing. It is designed to store and release rotational energy in the form of torque, forming a power spring that can provide high force output with very small space requirements.

There are two basic types of power springs - conventional and prestressed power springs. Conventional power springs are shaped to spiral from the center in the same direction as the winding. The advantages are low stress, long cycle life, and easy manufacturing. Prestressed power springs have a portion of their shape spiraling in the opposite direction of the winding. It can produce higher stress, resulting in up to 25% higher torque output than conventional power springs, and also produces a flatter torque gradient.
